Willow Glen High School is holding its 5th bi-annual Career Day on Thursday, May 31, 2007!

Sponsored and co-organized by the Willow Glen Foundation, Willow Glen High will host more than 100 professionals who are volunteering their time to speak on a wide range of careers. Over the course of the morning, students will learn about day-to-day challenges and rewards of those professions of greatest interest to them.

Panelists include Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren and San Jose Police Chief Rob Davis, as well as representatives from the following Willow Glen community businesses: Vin Santo Restaurant, Bella James Women’s Boutique, VVP Productions, Gloss Beauty Lounge, Downey Savings, California Sports Center, and Stacy’s Wag’N'Train. Participating Silicon Valley employers include Palm, Adobe, Genentech, Sandisk, Apple, Lockheed Martin, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and others.

In addition to specific career panels, students will attend one of two keynote presentations:

Motivational speaker Keith Hawkins on “The Choices We Make Today”

Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising’s Brooke Ewoldsen on “Dressing for Success, including a “Before and After fashion show featuring Willow Glen High students.

A parallel track has been organized for Spanish-speaking students, which includes a program hosted by the National Hispanic University and presentations from Spanish-speaking career professionals.

Mother, daughter chose same professions

By Mayra Flores De Marcotte, Willow Glen Resident

Like mother, like daughters. Karla Miller and her daughters Sarah and Kate share a common passion, as they are all teachers.

Karla Miller is an art teacher at Willow Glen Middle School. She began teaching at the middle school level after she graduated from college.

Update from the President

Posted to Uncategorized

Dear Wonderful Willow Glen Supporter:

I am writing to you once again to let you know what we have been up to so far this year, and to encourage you to consider a gift to the Willow Glen Middle School and High School Foundation.

This year’s Wine Tasting was once again a record-breaker! Just as we did last year, we doubled our proceeds, to $25,000. Our Live Auction was once again very popular, and we once again doubled the number of items in our Silent Auction. We also added cheese, chocolate, and gelato tasting. This year, we held the event in the lobby of the Garden Theater. It was a lovely venue for what has become a very popular community tradition.

Here are some examples of how we are spending the money we have raised:

  • We have once again funded the Robotics program. Our future mechanical, electrical, and computer engineers get hands-on experience in designing, constructing, and programming robots, and work as teams to compete with other schools.
  • We continue to support the “Helping One Student To Succeedâ€? (HOSTS) Mentoring/Tutoring program, with both funds and volunteers. We’ll soon be able to report on student progress.
  • We will sponsor the Career Fair at the High School again this year. Our new format promises to make it an even more valuable experience for our students.

Our newest Branch, Parents for a Great Education (PAGE), has been the driving force in finding the volunteers for HOSTS. They also reach out to Elementary school families to encourage them to support the Middle and High School, at the Community Carnival and Craft Fair, and during Recruitment.

And our other Branch, the Music Boosters, with the help of Pam Foley, is working with San Jose Children’s Musical Theater to again produce the Spring Musical at the High School. This year, the orchestra of the Musical will feature members of the Middle & High School Bands. Also this year, the Middle School will again produce a Spring Musical of its own. The Music Boosters also sponsored a Homecoming Float, on which the Middle and High School Band played as it paraded down Lincoln Avenue. And the very popular “Thursdays (and Fridays) at the Theater” family entertainment series continues its monthly performances in the Little Theater. I encourage you to visit their website (“www.ThursdaysAtTheTheater.org“)for the schedule, and to bring your family and friends.

You might notice that we are sending our letter later in the school year, and that you won’t receive a Phonathon call this year. We’ve raised enough money that we thought we would take a Phonathon break this year. We’re sure you won’t mind. Please consider a gift that will benefit both Willow Glen students and the community. Your contribution is tax-deductible.

With our sincerest thanks to you for your support,

Kim Guptill, President
